A Business Owners tale and a coin of two sides ….

I recently came across a friend who started his business around 5 years ago and they are doing really well today. His business is now international and the efforts of everyone involved has just been extraordinary. I well remember though how hard it was in the first two years where he fought tooth and nail to keep it going and there were months, he couldn’t afford a cup of coffee, every dirham he made was hard-earned and a salary for himself wasn’t even considered. It took a long time to get off the ground as it was a new concept, but he persevered. His story mirrors many other people today and often we forget just how challenging the initial months or years can be.

I am starting my own business you say with pride, ambition, joy, and a skip in your heart. Well done your friends and family say and many will offer best wishes and more.

”We wish you every success on your journey and we are sure you will be rolling in money and success will follow your every step”.

Great platitudes and you think Yes, I have got this and off you go.

People in business and especially during challenging economic times and add a pandemic on top are often great warriors and very seldom tell their own true story of how hard their journey had been and that the word and meaning of success changes daily for them.

They will not tell you about the sleepless nights they have worrying over clients not paying invoices on time, the sudden increase in rent the landlord has imposed, the extra or hidden fees you miraculously have to find, increased competition and the sheer determination you need to keep finding new ways to stay in business and increase your profile.

Yes, we all have these stories and many more besides BUT…….the other side of the coin is worth sharing too.

The days when you feel great, as free as a bird because You are in charge of your own destiny. You decide where the coins will fall today and how you will deal with it. You choose to warrior through this because you believe with every grain of energy inside of you that this is right………….

A day will come when you have that success, and the world will feel just right and your heart and soul say, Yes, I was right to do this. This is what I was meant to do, and I feel I am in the right place and I will continue to build on this success. Be grateful that you had the courage, tenacity, drive, ambition, and sheer strength to see it through.

No one said having a business is easy but it sure isn’t boring and no two days are ever the same. Enjoy the good days, persevere through the tough ones, and live the experience to the max.

Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back every now and again – you deserve it!

The Importance of Networking

I have been involved in networking for over 30 years and have found it invaluable for my business and social life. I have met and made some lifelong friends, met people who have interests totally diverse from my own and I have experienced many cultures and people of diversity that have enriched my life and I hope it will continue to do so.

But how do you make a network work for you? There are some ground rules to take into consideration when looking at which network to join and how best to make them work for you.

Decide your Goal – What do I want to achieve from this group.

Introduce yourself and explain clearly what you can offer!

Maintenance of Relationships

Have fun with it. You could well meet new friends that could be life-changing.
